Well this tune was an experiment in mimicking the production of the original using very few tools. The original is brilliant but is far more heavily produced than I can match with the @acapellaapp. So I drowned it in reverb and turned up the gain so the fiddle distorted a little through my headset mic. Not perfect, but I think it has a similar feel at least. I have my disagreements with several peripheral policies commonly associated with the BLM platform, in particular the frequent inclusion of economic policies I believe to be harmful. But what I am emphatically behind both as a libertarian and as a human being is solidarity with other human beings who are being persecuted. I support police demilitarization, ending the drug war that so disproportionately affects people of color, peaceful protests for human rights, ending qualified immunity, and reducing the power that the police, and the government whose laws they enforce, wield over the people. I am therefore very much in favor of suspending my artistic endeavors for a day to honor #blackouttuesday

There’s no practice like sitting down to learn and record a tune. I’m already starting to feel more confident on all my instruments after a lengthy hiatus from posting. I set myself a pretty ambitious goal today: to cover one of my all time favorite tunes and not screw it up too bad. This is called The Places We’ll Go by @theeastpointers. I wasn’t going to post this today but my lovely bride @tallkapp convinced me to. Why wasn’t I goin to? Well, I’m not a very good bodhran player, I hate the tipper I have, my dadgad accompaniment is simplistic and rhythmically inconsistent, and my irish fiddle chops have atrophied over the past year of no longer playing the style regularly. But I’ve been telling myself forever that I want to get back into making videos and music. I can’t expect to be perfect. In this case, it’s better to let it be what it is and share rather than sharing nothing because it’s not perfect. The only way I’m going to get better is by being consistent. So here’s an imperfect version of a tune called Frank’s Reel. I don’t think I’ll manage a tune a day like @fergalscahillmusic of @webanjo3 but I’m going to try and make this a regular thing. My reaction when I heard yesterday that I get to go to Arizona with @crowdtheoryent not once but twice in the next couple months! I’m traveling a lot for gigs this year so far. Next week I go to Reno with @rosespawnshop for their residency at the @peppermillreno casino. Then Phoenix with Crowd Theory, Los Angeles for St Paddy’s day, Ireland with @whiskey_sunday, Santa Barbara, and then Tucson with Crowd Theory again. All between now and May. Phew! Five years ago today I married this woman. This hard-working, beautiful, silly badass who fits me and my family like a puzzle piece. I chose this picture of her as the first because its an example of some of my favorite moments with her, when I look over at her and just smile. Some day, when she’s won the Oscar for best screenplay or something, and everyone wonders what she’s really like, I’ll look back on moments like this. Moments when she was bundled up in our little room, computer propped on a wedge pillow in her lap, chocolate and wine sitting on the dresser beside her, writing her very first professional screenplay. These are the sort of moments I am so uniquely blessed to witness, the little moments in such a big person’s life that I am so privileged to share. She is the mandalorian to my baby yoda, the Tigger to my Pooh, the Eve to my Wall-E, and my literal favorite person in the world. I know that most of what I do on Instagram is music-related, but my interests range far wider than just playing the violin. If you didn’t know, I run a podcast with my brother, @jgutilla19 called @worldbuildersanonymous. We’ve been on hiatus for the past 6 months or so, what with babies and airplanes taking up more time in our lives. But one of our goals for this new year is to get back to writing and podcasting. A dream of mine for a long time has been to finish a novel and release it to the public. Since I was a little kid, stories, particularly fantasy stories, have captured and fed my imagination. I’ve always wanted to create something that could foster wonder, curiosity and creativity for other people. But writing is hard. So often, I get stuck deciding how many oarsmen it would take to crew an Imperial brig, or whether it’s really realistic to use gemstones as a form of currency instead of, imagine this, actually writing. Getting bogged down in these details is fun but sometimes unproductive in actually finishing your novel. So that’s why we created world builders anonymous, as a support group for those who want to kick their world building addiction and finally finish a draft. Accidental selfie while recording a video for a friend’s project recently. Another goal I have for the year is to do more remote recording work, as well as more of my own recordings just for the heck of it. I’ve never really been a song writer, or even much of a tune writer. I don’t mean that I don’t have the ability; it’s more like I don’t have the drive. I’d like to use writing this year as a means of keeping the creative impulse sharp, of being intentional with my music rather than reactionary, as is so often the case when I play with other people. One of my goals this year is to get back to regularly posting on Instagram. I had such a great response when I started two years ago but with all the craziness of moving across the country, studying for aviation tests, re-establishing a music network on the East Coast, I’ve fallen out of the habit of posting. To be honest, I feel a little self-conscious about my musical skills at the moment. I’ve been playing fairly regularly but no where near as much as I was before moving away from California. But I’m starting off this year the best way possible: with family. As much as I miss playing at the @tamoshanterla with @theploughboys for New Years, this is the first year in forever that I haven’t had a gig New Year’s Eve, and have been able to start the year surrounded by the people I love most. I have a trip to Ireland with @whiskey_sunday to look forward to in March, a year of flying ahead of me, and adventures aplenty that I can’t even anticipate. So I worked on this one for way too long this morning. Trying to emulate the seamless sound of the uilleann pipes with a fiddle is no easy task. @calumstewartpipes made this one sound so easy in his version. Until I get some pipes of my own, this may be as close as I can get. Pardon the hairy leg in the background...and the series of weird expressions. I got a little loopy after having played this like 20 times trying to play in time with myself. I think I finally got something approaching decent though.
